Groundsmen

Position Overview & Responsibilities:
Groundsmen shall work under the direct supervision of linemen at all times and shall assist linemen as directed in the performance of their work which includes  the loading and unloading of ladders, materials and equipment, but under no circumstances shall a groundman climb poles, towers or structures (unless selected and classified as an Apprentice Lineman), or work in the proximity of energized lines or equipment. Groundman may operate pick-up trucks and light flatbed trucks. 
Groundmen’s general duties are to assist line crew or network crew members by working on the ground, handing tools and heavy materials to workers, while providing safety support at the bottom of a ladder while linemen are operating at heights. 
Groundmen’s can be selected to be apprentice linemen wherein they can be temporarily scheduled to assume the role, provided they have been selected and certified by the company’s HSE Department and management team.

Other duties:
• Passes tools to line crew or network crew members by acting as a general helper on the ground. Handles cables, conduit and other materials as directed.
• Assists line crew with setting poles by shoveling or piking; fills anchor holes.
• Clears undergrowth from right-of-way by using hand tools or saws. Piles debris to clear path. Performs general clean-up of job sites following completion of work.
• Positions reels of cable as necessary to support the linemen in their cable run 
• Assists network crew topman with lowering and raising equipment and network elements to the cable splicer working below or above.
• Notifies customers of impending disruption of service while lines are under repair.
• Flags traffic to protect teammates and the public from injury.
• May drive  1-ton pickup truck to job site or to obtain supplies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Job duties are subject to change as directed by management.
 
Areas of responsibility include:
• Highly Customer Service oriented
• Special attention to grooming, hygiene care and clean and proper uniforms as outlined by the company
• Health and Safety must be of highest importance
• Provide effective problem resolutions to facilitate faster deliveries and improved working relationships between the client/customer.
• Troubleshoot, negotiate and mediate client problems or complaints that arise at site level.
• Ensure consistent and continuous compliance by all co-workers & teammates with HSE safety and regulatory requirements, standards and protocols.
• Ensure accurate and timely communication with back-office support staff and management, including role call of onsite attendance, start times, cable/clamp materials used, # of poles of each run, among other necessary work in progress reports.
• Minimize construction costs without compromising safety, system quality or operational impact.
• Install and repair Fiber Optic and Copper cable in a variety of environments.
• Contributes to work team to ensure proper equipment is available for the completion of job assignments and ensures the security of all company equipment from loss, theft or damage
• Record and document testing per customer specifications.
• Perform daily duties in a safe manner.
• Maintain a professional working attitude with co-workers and customers at all times.
• Further industry knowledge on an ongoing basis.


Education and Experience
• CXC or equivalent training with 2 or more year’s technical experience preferred
• Positive attitude, well organized, dependable, and excellent listening skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


 Physical and Environmental Requirements:
• Must be able to work alone with little or no direction.
• Will need to work outdoors in all weather conditions, at times in confined spaces.
• Heavy lifting (30 kgs+), carrying of loads up and down stairs/ladders, walking and/or standing for prolonged periods.
• Working with heights, climbing of stairs, ladders, and/or scaffolds, and utility poles.
• Ability to distinguish between colors, use small hand tools.
• Reaching and/or grasping, stooping, kneeling, bending, crawling, and crouching.
• Exposure to noisy or dusty conditions, mechanical, electrical, and/or other hazards.
